the appearance,
Hallie is nothing more than a simple mare. She has no fancy markings or flashy colors, and she could care less if she did. She certainly wouldn't be able to appreciate them. Still, she's only a grulla. A light, grey-brown with dustings of a darker shade over much of her body. Her face is a darker tinge, cloudy looking, with lighter patches and darker patches but always faded. Her legs are the same, with black tiger stripes that start at the midpoint on her cannon bone and stop just above her knees and hocks. She gets these from her mother, but they are thicker and fade into her leg's shades for the most part. Her eyes are the most striking, a light, cloudy blue for the obvious reason that she is blind. She can't see a thing, and she's is always singled out with such a blatantly displayed disadvantage.
the personality,
For the most part, Hal is a soft, sweet, quiet, polite filly. She knows she's already at the bottom of the pecking order due to her disability, and so she accepts this graciously and in turn gives each and every other equine respect.
However, it is very easy to lose this respect. For all her good manners, Hallie is still a young horse, still finding herself, and she can be moody and quick to judge, just like many others can be. She's touchy about her vision, as well. Comment on it, especially in pity or in mocking, and she'll snap, and snap fast. Her hearing and sense of smell are extra sensitive, so trust me, those teeth will find their mark. And if they don't, except claws and beak after you. Jasper is very protective of his "daughter", and don't ever doubt their connection. They practically communicate silently with her movements and his talons gently upon her skin.
She's a particularly defensive mare, but she's had to be. She's tougher than she looks, for although it doesn't take much to change her opinions of you, it does take quite a bit to actually break her down to the point where she feels threatened. She is surprisingly confidant and sure of herself considering her condition and her history, and it will take a whole lot to make her doubt herself. She is also well-versed, very eloquent with her words on many an occasion, perhaps due to her regal guardian who prides himself on such things.
the history,
Hal has had a short life, but a rough one. Her mother left her upon birth, and if that wasn't terrible enough for a young foal, Hallie was born blind. She had no eyesight with which to help her find her way to someone who would help her. She was not alone on that chilly, early autumn morning, though. A young gyrfalcon who was only in his first year away from the nest had been watching, horrified with how easily a dam could just leave her foal. He stuck around, watching as the foal scrambled to her legs, tripping with every moment. Eventually, he flitted down to the ground.
"Do you need help, my dear?" Those were the first words the dusty brown ears, still too big for her head, had heard. With a snort and a soft squeal, she tried to leap away from the noise and ended up flat on her face. The bird rose to the air again for a moment, coming closer and spotting the cloudy blue eyes. "Oh, little one. Stay here. I'll be back. I promise."
She trusted that promise, and he kept it. The bird had flown off, found a free mare to raise the child and led the mare to her. The mare took pity on Hal, raised her as her own but always made sure the filly knew they were unrelated. When she was old enough to fend for herself, the mare left her. But there was one who had never left. He called himself Jasper, the gyrfalcon did, and he stuck by the filly's side day and night, guiding her, telling her of the terrain ahead. She became skilled in sniffing things out on her own, but now and then he does still have to help her out. They've become inseparable, but he treats her more like his daughter than his friend.
